BANGALORE: It was on March 18 that the Bidadi police registered a case against Swami Nityananda under six sections of the Indian Penal Code. It included rape, unnatural sex, cheating, criminal conspiracy and so on. The case was based on a complaint filed by Kuruppan Lenin, former driver of Nityananda, who alleged the swami had indulged in these crimes.
The case was handed over to the
CID and Nityananda spent over 51 days in prison, before being released on bail. But, the CID is still struggling to get a formal complaint from a victim. The entire case hinges on a third-party complaint.
CID DGP D V Guruprasad said it’s yet to get a statement from victims, who, according to him, are living abroad.
What’s the status of the cases against the Swami? As far as two the major charges of rape and unnatural sex, we haven’t received any statement from the victims. So far, barring Kuruppan Lenin, who initially lodged the complaint, no one has testified before the CID in this regard. Over six victims are in touch with us over phone and email. Some sent their statements via email. All are living abroad.
Which means the CID hasn’t got a formal complaint from any victim?Yes. We haven’t received any formal complaint from a victim. Since all live abroad, we’re working out ways by which we can either get them here to record their statements or our officers go abroad for this.
During interrogation, did Nityananda confess to any crime?Nityananda hasn’t made any confessional statement. He claimed the tapes were morphed. But technical experts’ report say the tapes aren’t morphed.
What exactly is the case against Nityananda? We are looking into another case of hurting religious sentiments. Two people have lodged complaints against Nityananda in this regard and they will be called and examined. Both live in Tamil Nadu and we will
take it up soon.
